LOCALLY OPERATED x CRAFTSMANSHIP THAT WON'T DISAPPOINT
Nordby Construction was established in 1953. Rod’s father, Gene Nordby, grew up on a 120-acre farm and had a dream of one day taking over the family farm operation. Gene’s plans to make a living on the farm never panned out, his parents weren’t ready to pass the farm on just yet. Instead, Gene worked for the Barron Creamery and hauled canned milk. As time went on, farms began to switch from cans to bulk tanks and several farmers asked the handyman, Gene, to build milk houses on their farms to shelter these new bulk tanks. Building milk houses soon led to other construction projects for Gene, such as remodeling bathrooms and building kitchen cabinets. By the mid 1950’s, Gene saw the potential for a construction business, so he quit his job at the creamery, moved off the family farm and purchased a home in Barron.

The move marked the birth of Nordby Construction. As the business quickly grew, Gene took on Vern Miller Sr. as a building partner, and the two became involved in larger-scale projects, such as major additions, remodeling and new home construction. The duo became known as “the singing carpenters.”
Rod joined Nordby Construction in 1973 when he was in 8th grade working for $3.00 per hour summers thru high school and college. Rod joined the crew full time in 1983. Gene, Vern and Rod worked together as a team until Vern retired in 1987. The following year, Gene was diagnosed with a brain tumor, forcing him into retirement in 1990. At this time Rod decided to carry on the family business and became owner of the company.
Construction is more than building materials to Rod. It’s a glimpse into the past that he said he would always remember and respect. Every once in awhile a remodeling project will come up that puts him face-to-face with some handy work that his father did some 30 years ago. It makes him both proud and sad to tear it apart, but he realizes that nothing lasts forever.
Rod also has great love and pride in his community. He is an active member of First Lutheran Church, the local Kiwanis Chapter and the Barron Area Education Foundation. Each year, Nordby Construction offers a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior going into the trade. Rod is also an alderman of the Barron City Council, a member of the Barron Area School Board and the Barron Chamber of Commerce. Community service has always been a large part of Rod’s life and this same dedicated service is extended to every customer in every aspect of any given project. Nordby Construction was also honored at the 2008 Barron Chamber of Commerce Business and Industry Day.
